What is Collagen?
Collagen is a complex protein that acts as a glue in the connective tissues throughout your body. With a whopping 19 amino acids it is the key structural protein that ensures the strength, elasticity and regeneration of all connective tissues, including skin, tendons, ligaments, cartilage and bone.
“Collagen is the most abundant protein in our bodies but from the age of 25 our natural production of collagen dramatically declines.”
Why supplement Collagen?
Collagen is the most abundant protein in the body but your body produces less and lower quality collagen as you age. From the age of 25, the body’s natural production of collagen rapidly declines resulting in the visible signs of ageing like wrinkles and brittle hair and nails, as well as the invisible wear and tear on joints and ligaments.
Supplementing your daily diet with collagen is an inside-out approach that can improve skin and hair condition, reduce wrinkles, strengthen bones, repair joints and reduce inflammation.
Protecting yourself from ultraviolet light, which breaks down collagen, and eating foods high in antioxidants, like fruits and vegetables, can also prevent collagen breakdown.
Know your Collagen
Of all forms of collagen, evidence shows that hydrolyzed collagen is absorbed most efficiently by the body. Also known as collagen peptides, hydrolyzed collagen is made of the same amino acids as collagen but are much shorter chains of amino acids making them more digestible and more easily absorbed into the bloodstream.
The Harvest Table’s collagen is 100% pure with no additives, fillers or flavourants. Our granules are fast dissolving and virtually tasteless making them the easiest way to supplement your diet with collagen.
What does the research say?
Studies suggest that various types of collagen supplements may help relieve joint pain related to OA.
- In two studies, raw type-II collagen — taken daily for up to 6 months reduced joint pain and stiffness in individuals with OA
- In another study, taking hydrolysed type-II collagen — daily for 10 weeks reduced scores of joint pain, stiffness, and disability by 38% in individuals with OA
Early research shows that taking supplements may boost collagen levels in your skin, reduce wrinkles, and improve skin elasticity and hydration.
- In a study in 114 middle-aged women, taking hydrolyzed collagen type I — daily for 8 weeks reduced wrinkle volume by 20%
- In another study in 72 women ages 35 years or older, taking hydrolyzed collagen types I and II — daily for 12 weeks reduced wrinkle depth by 27% and increased skin hydration by 28%
